2010-11 Playoff Summaries

February 5, 2011  - 1st Round of Playoffs

Penguins vs. Devils

The first game of the penguin playoffs kicked of Saturday with the Penguins taking on the Devils.  Logan Petty opened up the scoring early in the first period with his first of three tallies on the day.  Ralph Triboletti also got in on the scoring adding a hat trick of his own.  The Penguins’ Sean Carey tried to keep his team in the game with two goals but the Devils balanced scoring of Petty, Triboletti and Carignan proved too much for the Penguins to handle as the Devisl prevailed 7 to 2.  The Devils and Penguins would have to wait for the late game to see whom they would be taking on Tuesday night as the playoffs continue….stay tuned!!!

Blackhawks vs. Sabres

 The late game on Saturday had the Blackhawks battling the Sabres.  The Sabres playing without one their big guns Jake Cook looked to their young players to chip in and Gavin Weis and Nathan Mountain did just that scoring 5 of the teams 7 goals en route to a 7 to 1 victory.  Weis dazzled with a hat trick and Mountain pitched in with 2.  Gabe Donahue and Justin Rossi each had a goal and an assist and played stellar defense in front of first-year netminder Evan Walsh, who came within minutes of his first career shutout!!  Tom Kelly of the Blackhawks ended any thoughts of a shutout with a laser that Walsh had no chance on. The Blackhawks will play the Penguins in an elimination game on Tuesday while the Sabres will faceoff with the Devils with a berth into the championship on the line!!

February 8, 2011  - 2nd Round of Playoffs

Devils vs. Sabres

The 6 o’clock contest had the Devils facing off with the Sabres with a berth into the Championship game on the line. Much of the first period was scoreless until Jake Cook scored what would be the first of two goals on the night with just over a minute left. Gavin Weis scored with just four seconds left in the stanza to put the Sabres up by two. Weis then scored his second goal and league-leading fifth goal of the playoffs just a minute and change into the second.  Justin Rossi added a tally early in the third to put the Sabres up 5-0. The Devils tried to mount a comeback but were stymied by Eddie Appenzeller until Anthony Carignan finally put one by him with just 20 seconds to go as the Sabres moved on to the championship with a 5-1 Victory!

 Blackhawks vs. Penguins - Elimination Game

The 7 o’clock game was an elimination contest with the Penguins and Blackhawks looking to stay alive. The Blackhawks came out flying, putting constant pressure on the Penguins but were unable to put anything by Derek Barnabei and after one period the game remained scoreless.  The Blackhawks persistence paid off in the second period when Luke Phillips finally broke the scoreless tie with his first of his two goals early in the second. Young winger Deric Slobodjian scored the first goal of his playoff career putting the Hawks up 3-0.  Tom Kelly scored early in the third period - the first of his two goals - to make it 4-0. Brendan McKeever scored on a blast from the point to finish up the scoring for the Hawks. Sean Carey, who carried the Penguins on his shoulders all year, broke up the shutout attempt of Colby Bytheway, finishing the scoring up as the Blackhawks celebrated their first win of the season, 6-1.  The Blackhawks will now take on the Devils in another elimination game for the right to play the Sabres in the Championship game. February 26, 2011  - Semi-Final Round of Playoffs - Elimination Game

The Blackhawks and Devils did battle for the right to meet the Sabres for the Penguin Division Championship.  The miracle on street continued to gain momentum as the Blackhawks outlasted the Devils 3-2.  It was the second straight elimination win for the Blackhawks who were winless in the regular season but continue to pile up the wins in the postseason.  Luke Phillips led the way for the 'Hawks, scoring a pair of goals both assisted by Tom Kelly who played strong game.  The Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Logan Petty but were quickly tied by the goal by Phillips.  Another goal tally by Luke put the 'Hawks up 2-1 and they never looked back!  The 'Hawks now turn their attention to the Sabres on Tuesday night @ 545 pm - and look for another win to extend their Cinderella season.  The Sabres can close out the season and bring home the Cup with a win!  Stay tuned for more!
