Thursday March 18, 2004:
The championship game featured the
top 2 teams of the season in IBEW 351 and Charlie's. In the regular
season the 2 teams meet twice and the result was a 6-4 victory for
Charlie's early on in the season and later a 4-4 tie. The IBEW team
showed as the season went on that they were a team to be reckoned with
as they came together and began a domination of games that became their
hallmark. Charlie's began the season with 4 quick victories and never
looked back. In week 5 they were matched against the pre season favorite
Carpenters' Contractors, who featured a high powered offense and the big
A on defense in a battle of the undefeated. In that game Charlie's came
out the victor as they out gunned Carpenters 5-3. After that game
Charlie's set in motion a season that hasn't happened in a long, long
time. Charlie's forged an undefeated campaign that included 2 ties and
15 victories. Along the way Charlie's outdualed every competitor that
they faced.
In the playoffs, Charlie's was
paired against the defending champs Somers Point Auto Body. The game was
knotted at 2 until Charlie's blasted one in @ 2:36 left in the 3rd
period. A late goal made the score a 4-2 final.
Next up was IBEW 351. This game
showed to all who watched that these 2 teams were destine to meet again.
After 3 periods the score was tied at 2 and we were headed to overtime.
In a display of great defense these 2 teams battled through not 1 not 2
but 3 overtimes and at 1:43 left in the 3rd overtime Charlie's put the
game winner in and 2 very exhausted teams completed the longest game in
Somers Point Street Hockey history. The victory earned Charlie's the
right to advance to the Championship game in the winners bracket.
Meanwhile IBEW 351 continued on
their mission to take home the cup as they prepared to play Doran
Heating and Cooling, a team that ruined everybody's day that they played
in the playoffs. Doran played spoiler as they rebounded after an early
playoff loss to IBEW 351 to march to the semi final game against the
very team that beat them. In an overtime thriller IBEW 351 prevailed
and in the process won the chance to go for the Cup.
The championship game began with
the 2 teams very tight and playing a defense oriented game. Charlie's
broke through when Dustin Peterson scored the games 1st goal on a shot
that was aided by the screen set up by Steve Silk. Moments later the
same duo combined for a 2nd goal and Charlie's took a 2-0 lead after 1
period. The second period started with Steve Campbell netting a goal for
IBEW 351 and cutting the deficit in half with only .18 seconds gone in
the 2nd period. After that goal both teams displayed great defense with
Jim McGettegin and Jeff Zale shutting down any thought that Charlie's
had of padding their lead. On the other side Colin Halliday and Dan
Kissack did just the same as the 2 teams battled for next 23 minutes and
16 seconds of scoreless hockey. At 1:16 left in the 3rd period Charlie's
found themselves shorthanded after a tripping penalty by Stef Mell and
IBEW 351 was perched to tie the game. Charlie's goalie Mike Planterich
had different ideas. IBEW 351 pulled their goalie, Vince Nistico, and
started their assault. Charlie's fended off the 6 on 4 attack to claim
the victory and the championship.
These 2 teams were so evenly
matched that in the 4 games they played the margin of victory was 4
goals. Charlie's completed their season undefeated and as the 2003-2004
Cadet Champions

play. The game winning goal was scored by Dan Kissick from the
